BMJ Case Rep Published online: [please include Day Month Year] doi:10.1136/bcr-2015210558 DESCRIPTION A 10-year-old girl presented with blurred vision in her right eye since birth. Birth, developmental and medical histories were otherwise unremarkable. Her best corrected visual acuity was 20/30 and 20/20 in the right and left eyes, respectively, with bilateral mild myopia (−3.5 dioptres). Anterior segment, lens, ocular motility, Ishihara test and intraocular pressure were normal. Relative afferent papillary defect was negative. Normal fundus was found in the left eye. Right fundus photography revealed large peripapillary atrophy (deep cupping surrounding optic disc especially in the inferior side) with 6 disc diameters in width surrounded by pigmented ring with normal retinal vasculature (figure 1). There was no overlying central glial white veil on the disc and it was not associated with choroidal coloboma, excluding possibilities of morning glory syndrome and optic disc coloboma. Staining of peripapillary atrophy was found by fundus fluorescein angiography (figure 2). The patient was diagnosed as peripapillary staphyloma. The spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (RTVue, Optovue, New York, USA) demonstrated deep excavation between fovea and disc, 2.1 mm in depth. There was normal foveal structure without accompanying serous macular detachment

Clinical Applications of Optical Coherence Tomography in Ophthalmology

Assessment of the peripapillary nerve fiber layer and macular thickness can be determined in ophthalmology using optical coherence tomography (OCT). Decreased nerve fiber layer thickness and macular ganglion cell thickness in optic nerve ischemia have been correlated with visual field loss. OCT allows deep optic nerve head evaluation which helps understand pathophysiology of diseases.  Furtherm...

بررسی پایایی و تکرار پذیری دستگاه Spectral domain optical coherence tomography در اندازه گیری ضخامت ماکولا در چشمهای طبیعی قبل و بعد از گشاد کردن مردمک

Background: optical coherence tomography is one of the most valuable imaging techniques in the evaluation of macula. Objective: to investigate the repeatability and reproducibility of OCT  in measuring the macular thickness in normal eyes before and after pupil dilation. Methods: A total of 44 eyes were enrolled. All subjects underwent macular thickness measurement using the Cirrus SD-OCT ma...

Retinal Ganglion Cell Complex in Alzheimer Disease: Comparing Ganglion Cell Complex and Central Macular Thickness in Alzheimer Disease and Healthy Subjects Using Spectral Domain-Optical Coherence Tomography

Introduction: Alzheimer disease (AD) is the most common form of dementia worldwide. The modalities to diagnose AD are generally expensive and limited. Both the central nervous system (CNS) and the retina are derived from the cranial neural crest; therefore, changes in retinal layers may reflect changes in the CNS tissue. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) machine can show delicate retinal layer...

Myopic Macular Retinoschisis in Teenagers: Clinical Characteristics and Spectral Domain Optical Coherence Tomography Findings

To investigate the morphological characteristics of myopic macular retinoschisis (MRS) in teenagers with high myopia, six male (9 eyes) and 3 female (4 eyes) teenagers with typical MRS identified from chart review were evaluated. All cases underwent complete ophthalmic examinations including best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), indirect ophthalmoscopy, colour fundus photography, B-type ultrason...

Spontaneous resolution of foveal detachment in dome-shaped macula observed by spectral domain optical coherence tomography

Dome-shaped macula (DSM) was described by Gaucher et al as a convex protrusion of macula within a staphyloma in highly myopic eyes that causes visual impairment associated with serous foveal detachment (SFD). We describe a patient with spontaneous resolution of SFD in DSM documented by serial spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT). A 28-year-old female Japanese patient presented ...
